Synopsis: In ancient times, Alexander the Great holds court at the scene of his greatest triumph, newly-conquered Persepolis. The court musician Timotheus performs, successively inspiring in his audience feelings of triumph, tenderness, joy, grief, and rage, culminating in the burning of the city. All this is depicted in a vivid series of choruses and arias, composed to poetry by John Dryden. This remarkable work bears comparison to Handel's later Messiah, but is nowhere near as often performed.
