Mary Figoten began playing the viola in her 30s. She had previously studied piano and music theory and sung in several choral groups, but had always dreamed of playing in an orchestra. While living in Northern California, she was presented with the opportunity to study viola and eagerly embraced it.
As an alto, she was naturally drawn to the viola’s rich sound and its role as an inner voice. After about a year of study, she was thrilled to join the Shasta Symphony. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, Mary was delighted to discover the wealth of musical opportunities available, including the Palisades Symphony and the Brentwood-Palisades Chorale. She now serves as librarian for the orchestra.
Mary has taught piano in her home studio and also worked as a classroom teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. After retiring from teaching, she embarked on a new and fulfilling career as a Los Angeles tour guide—a role she enjoys immensely. She has a passion for travel and a deep interest in exploring different cultures.
