From Dvorak’s Joy to Bloch’s Prayer

From Dvorak's Joy to Bloch's Prayer

Palisades Symphony — Two powerful worlds in one afternoon: on the eve of Chanukah, the Palisades Symphony and Brentwood Palisades Chorale come together for Dvořák’s life-filled Carnival Overture and Bloch’s deeply spiritual Sacred Service—a family-day celebration shaped by joy, reflection, and community.

We open with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture—about ten minutes of high-spirited sparkle. He wrote it in 1891 as the “Life” chapter of a three-overture set (“In Nature’s Realm,” Carnival, “Othello”) while preparing for his first American tour. Listen for rapid-fire string runs, bright brass calls, and that surprising quiet moment in the middle: a lyrical night scene led by woodwind solos before the street festival surges back. Extra percussion—triangle, tambourine, cymbals—gives the whole piece that marketplace shimmer you can almost feel.

Then we turn to Ernest Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service)—a major 20th-century work for baritone (cantor), chorus, and orchestra, created from a San Francisco commission in the early 1930s. It sets key moments from the Sabbath morning service in Hebrew. Listen for chant-shaped lines that grow into powerful choral peaks; ancient synagogue modes wrapped into modern harmony; the Shema and Torah-service passages unfolding like a symphonic path; and a closing prayer that brings the room into quiet peace. Bloch described this music as his voice for the “Jewish soul”—a blend of memory, longing, and deep identity.

The team bringing it to life
Dr. Maxim Kuzin, Music Director, prepared the orchestra for this program.
Susan Rosenstein, Chorale Director, conducts the Bloch with the Brentwood Palisades Chorale.
Cantor Marcus Feldman brings the Sacred Service to life as baritone.
Andrew Karatay, Assistant & Guest Conductor, leads the Dvořák.

We’re also deeply grateful that Mount Olive Lutheran Church has welcomed us with such warmth—we may finally have found a steadier home here. Our thanks to Pastor Tracy Williams, Administrator Maxine Dixon-Harvey, and Facilities Manager Max Diamond, whose care and kindness have truly carried us.

Why your presence matters
After the fires, we lost our base, and several of our own musicians lost their homes. Even so, we didn’t stop. We presented six concerts—each in a different venue—to support our own musicians, neighbors, lift spirits, and stay connected through the music we love. For a look at that journey, here is the L.A. Times front-page story about it:

Voices and Symphonies

Voices and Symphonies

The Palisades Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Maxim Kuzin, invites you to Voices and Symphonies — an inspiring evening where orchestra and voice unite in a celebration of beauty, passion, and renewal. With guest conductor Andrew Karatay, baritone Matthew Peterson, and soprano Emma Berggren, the program journeys from Beethoven’s joyful humor to Brahms’s profound intensity.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 sparkles with wit and vitality — a joyful declaration of life. Grieg’s Holberg Suite dances with Nordic elegance and warmth. Verdi’s operatic masterpieces bring the human voice center stage: baritone Matthew Peterson delivers gripping performances of “Cortigiani” from Rigoletto and “Eri tu” from Un Ballo in Maschera, while soprano Emma Berggren, under the baton of guest conductor Andrew Karatay, brings radiant serenity to Agathe’s aria, “Leise, leise,” from Weber’s Der Freischütz.

The program also features Nikolla Zoraqi’s Kaba for Orchestra — a 20th-century masterpiece by the Albanian composer and conductor, inspired by the centuries-old kaba lament tradition. The work unfolds as a dialogue between mournful lyricism and exhilarating motion, transforming ancient sorrow into a fast-paced celebration of resilience and hope. The evening culminates in Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, whose soaring finale embodies strength, struggle, and transcendence.

Dr. Maxim Kuzin, Ukrainian-born and internationally acclaimed, is celebrated for his passionate, expressive musicianship and for shaping concerts that move both heart and mind. As Music Director of the Palisades Symphony, he leads with a vision that unites artistry, community, and the belief that music can restore what hardship has taken away.

Admission is free, and all are welcome. Donations are gratefully accepted to support the Palisades Symphony’s recovery after the recent fires.

Join us for a night where every note speaks of hope — and music becomes the voice of renewal.

Three Tenor Titans

Three Tenor Titans

Immanual Presbyterian Church | 3300 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, 90010

This program is inspired by the groundbreaking Three Tenors concerts, when Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras united onstage in Rome on the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup Final. That performance reached an unprecedented 800 million viewers worldwide—making it the most-watched classical concert in history—and redefined classical music’s reach by blending opera arias, Neapolitan songs, and popular standards in spectacular outdoor venues. Their follow-up appearances at World Cups in Los Angeles (1994), Paris (1998), and Yokohama (2002) drew massive stadium audiences, shattered sales records (their 1990 album remains the best-selling classical recording ever), and introduced millions to opera for the first time.

Now, we bring that same spirit to life with our own trio of phenomenal tenors: Wiyoung Oh, Doo (David) Suk Yang, and Jungrok Oh—singing side by side with the Palisades Symphony in a thrilling, crowd-pleasing celebration of vocal and orchestral favorites.

With timeless music, powerhouse voices, and a spirit of joyful collaboration, this concert is sure to be a hit with opera lovers and newcomers alike.
